Rookie Blue
Show Guide
Rookie Blue follows the lives of five young ambitious cops fresh out of the Academy. Just like Grey’s Anatomy and other recent genre shows, the private lives and tribulations of our young heroes take centre-stage right along with the action. The group finds out soon enough that no amount of training can prepare them for real life policing, where the smallest mistake can have life-or-death consequences and serious emotional fall-out.

Characters
-
Andy McNally - The Rescuer
Missy Peregrym
Andy McNally’s mother walked away from her family when Andy was just 12 years old -- a time when a daughter needs her mother the most. Left to fend for herself and be raised by an alcoholic of a father, it’s no wonder she is guarded yet hopelessly optimistic. Her father, Tommy, is an ex-Rookie Blue tormented by secrets from his time on the job. Those secrets may explain why he was too damaged to be a real father to Andy.
Being a Rookie Blue is in her blood. It’s all she’s ever known and all she ever wanted to be. Andy joined the police force for the challenge as well as a sense of family she never had. She discovers that sense of belonging among her fellow rookies. Andy is great at her job because she truly believes she can make a difference in this world and won’t be convinced otherwise. She is the ultimate rescuer and enabler but quickly learns that she can’t save the world because not everyone wants to be saved.
To her rookie colleagues, Andy presents as a very confident, accomplished individual, leading them to think of her as the “together” one. Her instincts as a cop seem evident: smart, tough and even awe-inspiring at times. But few see Andy for what she really is: a vulnerable girl who is trying way too hard to appear invincible for the sake of her fellow rookies, for her father’s sake, and for her own sake. After seeing what the job did to her father, Andy is determined not to let the blue uniform get the best of her.
-
Traci Nash - The Balls
Enuka Okuma
A single mom with a six-year-old son, Traci prides herself on her independence. She is Andy’s best friend from the Academy and just like Andy, she is smart, hard-working and, not to mention, gorgeous. Yet the persona Traci projects – one of authority and composure – is much different from how she actually feels. Behind the confidence and brashness hides a deep well of uncertainty: can she reinvent herself and can she balance ever-conflicting personal and professional lives in the process?
She comes from a no-frills, working-class background and is a real people person who can relate to people from all walks of life. She has incredible street smarts and keen instincts which make her great at her job.
Traci is also unlucky in love. She’s sleeping with Detective Jerry Barber, her instructor at the Academy, who haplessly says the wrong things at all the wrong times. Despite his flaws, he gets along with her son and is always there for Traci. That’s why she is starting to fall in love with him. But how can she commit to Jerry when her ex is constantly at her heels to reconcile? Traci can’t help but feel that a reconciliation would certainly make life better for her son, even as her heart is pulling her towards Jerry.
-
Dov Epstein - The Thrill Seeker
Gregory Smith
Dov grew up idolizing Starsky & Hutch and has always wanted to drive fast cars and fire guns – in fact, he actually asked for a Glock for his Bar Mitzvah. Needless to say, he didn’t get it. A die-hard adrenaline junkie, his no-fear attitude stems from being raised on a steady diet of peace and love by his hippie parents. As soon as he could, he traded in his Swedish educational toys for protein shakes and NYPD Blue marathons and it wasn’t long before Dov was accepted to the force and went off to the Academy where he met his wingman and current roommate, Chris.
Dov is absolutely jacked about being a cop, and is so caught up in the hype of the TV-cop persona that he often forgets that this is for real, or that lives – his, as well as others – hang in the balance of decisions he makes on the job.
His quick wit marks him as one of those charming smart-alecks who sit at the back of class and somehow manage to make even the teachers laugh. His magnetism doesn’t cut it for Staff Sergeant Frank Best, who’s not impressed by his antics. He’s also a bona fide ladies’ man – at least that’s what he says. He’s funny and sweet and can’t resist showing off his gun.
-
Chris Diaz - The Poster Boy
Travis Milne
Ever since he was a kid, Chris had aspirations of becoming a cop. At an early age, something clicked in him and he knew that what he wanted most was to wear the clean blue uniform… to bring order to chaos… to be a hero. That’s exactly what he set out to do and he will stop at nothing to achieve his dream.
Square-jawed, clean-cut and built like a middleweight boxer, he might as well have walked right out of a recruiting ad. Chris was the top gun at the Academy, breezing through every test and challenge. He was such an avid achiever even his instructors treated him like one of their peers. He radiated trustworthiness and women flocked to him, although he was oblivious to such advances. He stayed loyal to his girlfriend back home in Timmins. He had plans to marry Denise until he joined the police service. Now he’s starting to realize how much attention the uniform draws – thanks in part to the not-so-subtle influence of his roommate and wingman, Dov -- and recognizing that settling down so early might not be such a good idea.
Chris knows the cop manual like the back of his hand, but he’s a small town boy who finds himself a bit lost amid the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, and can’t seem to find his stride as a big city Rookie Blue.
-
Gail Peck - The Politico
Charlotte Sullivan
Don’t count on Gail. She may be clever, but she’s also devious, two-faced and totally out for herself. She is not above sucking up, fudging the truth, or taking credit for the accomplishments of others. In other words, Gail is perfect ‘management material’.
Her goal is to overcome the petty allegiances of her rookie class and climb the ranks to a cushy big brass desk job. But first, Gail must overcome her lousy street instincts. Her judgment when it comes to real people in real situations can be too black and white, and notwithstanding her straight-A report card, she doesn’t have the best temperament to be a cop. Emotions run high in this job and that’s dangerous territory for someone as self-protective and persona-conscious as Gail. She attempts to compensate for any deficiencies in her disposition by manipulating her colleagues to suit her best interests.
Underneath her ruthless reputation lies a sad truth. Her ambition is motivated by the fact that she’s in the shadow of her cop-royalty family, who she can’t let down, at any cost. That’s a lot of pressure for one Rookie Blue.
But, as Gail slowly starts to befriend and trust her fellow rookies, she's going to have to figure out where her loyalties really lie.
-
Det. Sam Swarek - The Cowboy
Ben Bass
Swarek put his life at risk as an undercover cop for eight months working the Anton Hill case, delving deep into the treacherous world of drug trafficking. He was just two weeks away from bringing down the notorious heroin kingpin when his cover was blown by an eager, misguided rookie.
Now Swarek is back in uniform. Although he’d rather be back on the street than riding a boring desk job, he’s just biding time until a spot opens in the Guns & Gangs squad. While Swarek was prepared to walk the beat, he wasn’t prepared to be a training officer to the same rookie who blew his cover – Andy McNally, the one who ruined the biggest bust of his career.
Some see his cocky behaviour and renegade police tactics as immoral and irresponsible. Those who know him realize that underneath the brooding rogue persona he projects, Swarek is deeply ethical. He has a strict moral code, and is the soul of fairness. Will working so closely with an optimistic, vivacious rookie give Swarek a new perspective on the job? Will Swarek’s feelings for Andy force him to let his guard down and let someone in?
-
Det. Luke Callaghan - Mr. Right
Eric Johnson
Ask any of his female counterparts and they’d all agree that Detective Luke Callaghan is easy on the eyes. He’s smart, sexy, ambitious and knows what he wants in life. And what he wants is Andy McNally.
As a detective, his interaction with the rookie officers is minimal, except for delegating menial tasks to them. Yet somehow he finds every opportunity to gain Andy’s attention. His approach to detective work is cerebral - always thinking first and feeling later – which is the exact opposite of Andy’s approach to life and love. So is it possible for opposites to attract?
Luke has temporarily set up shop in 15 Division while investigating the murder of Zoë Martinelli, a rookie cop who was killed within the divisional boundaries. But with the more-than-occasional fresh body turning up in 15 Division, there’s plenty to keep “Homicide Luke” busy – and at 15 – for a long time.
But how long can he ignore the undeniable attraction between Andy and Swarek?
