Interview with The Good Wife’s Archie Panjabi

Posted by DIVA Universal

Sexy star of THE GOOD WIFE, Archie Panjabi, was in town recently and caught up with DIVA Universal to chat about the Emmys, Bollywood and what it takes to play the sultry investigator Kalinda Sharma.

Catch double episodes of seasons 1 & 2 of THE GOOD WIFE every Saturday from 8PM/7PM TH-JKT from August 6.

What’s the mood like on set of The Good Wife?

They’re all so fun it’s hard to keep a straight face on set sometimes. I get on really well with Matt, who plays Carey, probably because we’re in a similar age range. Josh as well makes me laugh a lot. Sometimes Christine Baranski, who has got a great voice, will start singing a song. Everybody’s got talent and are not afraid to show it on set.

Last year you took home your first Emmy for Best Support Actress on a Drama Series and you’ve been nominated again for 2011. How would you feel about another win?

Last year, it was so new and it was my first American television job so I didn’t even think about the Emmy’s. When I got the nomination, I was surprised and when I won, it was the most amazing surprise. But from what I heard, it’s really rare for an actress to win for a second round so I try not to think about it.

Do you still remember that evening?

It was probably one of the most fantastic moments in my life. I wasn’t necessarily known in America. I didn’t think that I had a huge chance of winning it because everything is very driven by publicity. You have to do a lot of publicity in order to gain a nomination. I didn’t think I had the chance so when I was told that I won, it was very emotional for me.

How is Kalinda different from you?

She doesn’t laugh much. I laugh much more than she does. She is much more reserved than me. But I think there are also similarities; I’m reserved on certain things. I think for every character that you play; there is always a little bit of yourself in it.

What’s so attractive about Kalinda Sharma to you?

I just like her strengths. She is witty, she is tough, I like the idea of playing an intelligent, confident women. The character is based on women that I know in the workplace.

Will Bollywood ever be on the cards?

I will never say nothing is on the cards. It’s something I would look for in the future after I finish The Good Wife. I grew up with Bollywood. I have respect for it. Hopefully one day.

Do you cook?

I do! I love cooking. One of the things that gives me happiness is cooking.

You’ve acted alongside Angelina Jolie before and said that she’s a huge inspiration to you. Why is she such an inspiration?

She’s one of the most down to earth actresses, which is completely different to what people expect. I worked with her in India for seven weeks and her ability to communicate and connect with people even though she’s this massive superstar was quite astounding and the amount of time and effort she invests in helping charities is pretty remarkable. She’s just a really good role model.

Are there any other actors you’ve always wanted to work with, and why?

George Clooney. I would love to improvise a film with him; he has this certain quality about him that is really interesting, he has a spark that is really fascinating. Maybe even Brad Pitt; I should mention that to Angie one day. Maybe Quentin Tarantino.

Would you ever like to do an Asian film?

Definitely. When I get the time and the window of opportunity I would love to do a western film but introducing Asian culture. Introducing the east to the west and our generation. Sometimes there are too many clichés about Asian people so one of the things I want to do in my career is to play characters that eliminate stereotypes.

Do you think you could take on a role with a South East Asian accent?

The Singaporean accent sounds really the same as the Malaysian accent, but maybe the Malaysian accent is a little bit more laid back. But I would definitely love to do that at some point because it is such a cute accent.
