Interview with Fairly Legal star Sarah Shahi

Posted by DIVA Universal

What is Fairly Legal to you?

I’ve always said that for me the show is a mix between Law and Order and Sex and the City so if those two had a baby it would be Fairly Legal.

How did you get the role of Kate?

I went and auditioned five weeks after having my baby and nothing fit me so I had to wear Nike running shorts, heels, my husband’s white t-shirt and a blazer jacket. They called my managers and said we liked her but have her come in and wear something that looks more professional so I came in wearing the only thing that fit me, which was this button down from a country and western Halloween costume. They thought I was crazy.

Do you love fashion? You got to wear some pretty cool clothes in the show.

I’m definitely a victim of fashion. I love heels. For the pilot we had those great six inch Louis Vuittons, which were eye candy to look at but hell to run in. I actually wanted her to wear Converse; I thought that would be cute!

Do you have any advice for staying fit?

Drink tequila? When I have time to work out I work out for about two hours and do everything from spinning to running and a lot of weights, which I like. When I don’t have time to work out I really have to watch what I eat. I try not to eat past seven p.m. so I have my dinner around six and my biggest meal of the day is breakfast then I’ll have small snacks like almonds or an apple or a banana. I’ll have a big salad for lunch then my dinner is the smallest meal of the day. I don’t like feeling hungry.

Do you have any working limits?

No, I should though! I heard Meryl Streep won’t work more than 8 hours which would be so nice! I guess all I need is seven Oscars then I can put that in my contract, too! I don’t have any of those limits yet.

What would you be doing if you weren’t an actress?

Now that I am an actress I feel like I have to do it or I’ll die. I sang for a while, not that I’m any good, but maybe I would have pursued that. I had interests at some point of studying neurology so maybe I would have progressed with that.

What’s your dream team to work with, directors or stars?

Jeff Bridges! He’s perfect. His essence and what he brings. You don’t have enough hours in the day to listen to me talk about how fantastic Jeff Bridges is. Directors, David Fincher right now is at the top of my list. For females, I’m obsessed with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Why are there so many references to The Wizard of Oz?

There is a lot of The Wizard of Oz references with the cell phone rings. What I’ve often said about Kate is that she is Dorothy and the tornado at the same time. She lives in this crazy world with her step-mother, the soon to be ex-husband, the assistant, the brother and then at the same time she is unpredictably whimsical and will do whatever she needs to do to solve the case for her clients so she’s both.

Do you have anything in common with Kate?

Yes I do. Both of us are very flirty, very feisty women. Very independent, but the way in which we differ, emotionally Kate to me is like a five- year-old. In later episodes then you start to see the relationship with Justin, the soon to be ex. She’s very much, love me, love me, okay go away, I don’t want anything more.

Kate Reed has quite a complicated life, do you?

I'm a full-time working actress, I'm married, and I have a 20 month old baby so I don’t know if it’s complicated, but it’s definitely busy. The schedule can be quite complicated! It’s one of those things where everybody wants me 120% and I want to be there, I want to be there for my husband 120%, I want to be there for my son 120% and I want to be there for my career 120%. I wish I could clone myself and be everywhere and then the real me could get some sleep.
